Church Constituted 1859

On Saturday before the fifth Sabbath in May a Presbytery composed of Elders J V McCullock  H Hardison & Wm T Everett - met in the methodist church at New Salem Drew Co Ark for the purpose of constituting a Missionary Baptist Church.

The Presbytery was organized & J. V McCullock acted as moderator. Nine males & eight females having presented there letters of recomendation from regular baptist churches & after a thorough examination s to the articles of faith & covenant upon which they proposed to be constituted The Presbytery resolved to proseed with the organization.

The Sermon was preached by J. V. McCullock a brief but impressive charge was delivered by H Hardison. The right hand of fellowship was extended by the church - and they were declared a regular Baptist church in due form. The church then met in conference by requesting J. V McCullock to act as moderator Protem. The church then moved that the offices for Deacons & clerk Should be elected by ballot the result of which George L Gammell & George Etheridge was elected to the office of Deacon // T N Prewitt C. Clerk. The Church then resolved that this church shall be called The Mount Olive Baptist Church. Rev Duvois was elected unanimously for Pastor. The church then adjourned to meet on Saturday before the Second Sabbath in June.

Note by Ann Etheridge Veazey: Though the above was unsigned, it was the first page in the church record minutes book with the above heading and was in the same handwriting as the succeeding minutes that were signed by T. N. Prewitt, Church Clerk. The Saturday before the fifth Sabbath referred to above was May 12, 1859, according to Robert M. Stone in whose custody these old church records now remain. Following this page was a detailed Church Decorum Section in which exact rules of parliamentary procedure were stated for the transaction of the church conference business; immediately thereafter was the Church Covenant and the Abstract of Faith - all unsigned, but written in the same old and surprisingly unfaded script-writing of Mr. Prewitt. The church documents were beautifully worded and complete in every respect as to the organization of a Baptist Church, but they were quite lengthy and have been deleted here.

Also according to Mr. Stone, there had at one time been a list of the charter members of the church listed on a separate page, but this list has been lost in the passage of time and the handling of the records. A personal letter dated June, 1936 from John Hurlston Johnson, son of William Monroe and Rebeccha J. (Etheridge) (Sullivan) Johnson, to Young William Etheridge and found by the compiler in the family Bible of William Whitehead Etheridge stated the following: "Rebecca J. Johnson died Oct. 17, 1904 and she was the last living charter member of the Mount Olive Church".

The church minutes that follow herein have been copied faithfully with the exception of repeating the one, two, three order of conference business when n was transacted. This has been noted by the use of three dot ellipses throughout this copied church record.

We The committee appointed to settle a difficulty betwixt Mt Olive Church on the one part & Rev. Watson on the other part, Bro S Cobb Called to the chair Bro A Bull secdtary. After due investigation we decide as follows (viz) on the Part of Brother Watson Article 1st not established for which Bro Watson is due the church acknowledgment, Article 2nd not established for which Bro Watson is due the church an acknowledgment, Article 3rd We do not think that the sisters absenting themselves from the conference were a contempt of the conference. Therefore Bro Watson is due the church an acknowledgment, We find on mature consideration that the church is amiss in duty as regards the compensation to her Pastor for which she is due an acknowledgment & we advise that she pay all she feel able,

On the Part of the Church, Article lst sustained for which Bro Watson is due an acknowledgment.

This is to certify that brother Hogan Allen, was ordained to the work of the gospel ministry, by prayer and the laying on of the hands of the eldership on the 16th day of June 1862. He was called to ordination by the Flat Creek Church of which he was a member which had ample opportunity to become acquainted with his piety and ministerial gifts.

The ordaining council was composed of C W Kinrd(?)  N A Watson brethren from Mt Zion & Mt Olive Churches, who after deliberate and thorough examination of the candidate cordially recommended him for ordination.  Our beloved brother, the bearer of this paper, has, therefore, the entire approbation of the ordaining council in being publicly set apart to preach the gospel and administer the ordinances of Christ.

May he, like Barnabas, be "full of the Holy Spirit and of faith", and through him may "much people be added to the Lord".

Mt Olive Regular Baptist Church of Christ; Do hereby Certify that our beloved Brother W. C. Kimbro was ordained to the work of the gospel ministry by Prayer and the laying on of the hands of the eldership on the 4th Lords day in May A. D 1870  He was called to ordination by the above named Church which he was a member of and which had ample opportunity to become acquainted with his Piety ministerial gifts;  The ordaining council was composed of Elders Hogan Allen  J. L. Hales and Henry Simes who after deliberate and thorough examination of the Candidate Cordially recommended him for ordination.

Our beloved Brother the Bearer of this has therefore the entire approbation of the ordaining Council in being Publicly set apart to Preach the gospel and administer the ordinances of Christ.

May he like Barnabas be full of the Holy Spirit and of faith; and through him may much People be added to the Lord.
