Olive and after divine Servises by Bro H Allen held conference… a letter from a committee appointed by the Baptist Church at Malvern was read concerning Louis Greely the clerk appointed to answer the correspondence and to state that we could not grant him a letter of dismission but grant them prevalege to restore if they deem the applicant worthy The church then went into election of pastor for the next associational year which resulted in the choice of Bro G. D. Moore we then went into election of Delegates to the association Bros H Allen, J R Riley and A. D. Note by Ann E. Veazey: On May 5, 1967, Mrs. Ella (Ingram) Higginbotham recounted the following story to me. Though

Mrs. Higginbotham is 94 years of age at this date, her clear voice and girlish laugh as she remembered and told this account, however, reminded me of the 16 year old girl she was at the time of the building of the Mt. Olive Church. She was married to William Thomas Higginbotham February 3, 1899.

“The Brother Higginbotham referred to in the minutes was my father-in-law, John Higginbotham. His wife and my husband’s mother was Fanny (Hale or Todd) Higginbotham, and Will’s full name was William Thomas though we always called him Will. His father had the contract to build the church at Mt. Olive, but Will helped him to build it. I went with them from our home in Promise Land on Monday morning and we stayed there all week, coming home on Saturday afternoons and going back the following week. By wagon, you know, and this took quite a spell of time to get to Berea. My job was to cook – in pretty weather I cooked outside “in the ashes! (and here her laughter rang out) and on rainy days I cooked on the top of a round heater inside the church. I cooked hot biscuits, cornbread, fried meat and eggs and other things that could be managed in a skillet. A Mrs. Murry lived just under the hill and she kept us supplied with fresh eggs. Will and I slept on two church benches turned together – to tell the truth I don’t remember where my father-in-law slept, but we made it just fine. The lumber for the church was rough lumber and it came from Mr. Knight’s sawmill – that’s Charley Knight’s father – I can’t remember his given name. Hogan Allen was the preacher. We had no children then, and Will and I thought the whole thing quite a lark. Besideds, the money paid for the building of the church was a BIG sum for those days and everyone was always short on that item.”

It might be interesting to note here that William Thomas Higginbotham’s grandson and namesake, W. T. Higginbotham, is the present County Judge of Ashley County

During those Days of Meeting the Followering persons united with the church, Ruth Douglas, Lidia Douglas, Walter Roberds, Kittie Riley and Willie Bell West and Hattie Mae Larkins, by Exp. And Baptism, and Bro. Frank Gaulet and J. L. West by relationship and Luther Fuel and Sister Eller Roberds by letter. Our Missionary Bro. Young was with us we paid him for his servises $10.30.
