William Farrar was born 1816 in Georgia. He was a descendant of very early (mid-1600s) settlers of Farrar Island, located at the mouth of the James River in Virginia. William and several siblings would make their way to Perry Co., Alabama by the late 1830s. In 1843 at the age of 27 he married Jerusha Bass in Perry County, Alabama. Around 1847-1849, he and his young family made their way west to Union Parrish, Louisiana. Around 1855 they moved north to Ashley County, Arkansas, settling near the community that would become known as Rawls.
